About Irwin Academic Center
Located on the campus of the historic former Harding High School just outside of Uptown, Irwin Academic Center is Charlotte’s only full Talent Development Magnet for academically and intellectually gifted elementary-aged students. It is also one of the most diverse schools in the city, in terms of race, socio-economic status, gender, and languages other than English spoken at home. Our school reflects the beautiful tapestry of the city, while consistently ranking among the top schools in the state of North Carolina as a model for gifted learning. But even better, it is wonderful place for children to grow and learn together.
The Irwin Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) is the non-profit, volunteer organization arm of Irwin Academic Center. Our PTA is made up of parents, teachers, and staff. We are a PTA for everyone. We want to make Irwin a more wonderful place for children.

- Streamlining communication to better promote parent engagement
- Investing in classroom resources to improve social-emotional learning, student engagement, and enrichment programs
- Reaching fundraising targets and identifying sponsorship and funding opportunities from broader Charlotte community
- Creating meaningful experiences to enhance and support student life as well as the broader Irwin community

- $5.25 of the membership goes to NCPTA
- Remaining $14.75 helps offset the cost of supporting the PTA activities, including providing agendas (grades 4-5), purchasing instruments for music and equipment for PE, supporting teacher professional development, Scholastic readers (grades K-3), along with invaluable financial support to teachers and staff, which helps Irwin students achieve.

PTA Executive Board General Responsibilities:
- President- The president overseas all operations and committees under the PTA umbrella.
- Treasurer- The treasurer overseas all the financial operations and the records of the PTA.
- VP Gold (Fundraising) - The Gold VP oversees fundraising related committees, including Boosterthon and the Wise Owl Fund. Most involvement is off-site except for special events. Participation in board meetings and general membership meetings is expected.
- VP Maroon (Events) - The Maroon VP oversees Events related committees, including the Father-Daughter Dance and Teacher Appreciation. Most involvement is off-site except for special events. Participation in board meetings and general membership meetings is expected.
- Secretary - The PTA Secretary’s primary duties include recording the minutes of both board and general meetings. The Secretary also oversees communication committees, including the production of the Weekly Hoot newsletter. It’s a great position for someone who enjoys writing and communication.
Our Irwin PTA is dedicated to helping support our students' academic, mental, and social growth. We provide funding directly to the classrooms and school, develop programming to promote family engagement and provide resources and services to enrich and maximize the education of every child.
