What is Let Me Run?
Let Me Run is a seven-week running program for pre-teen and teenage boys, led by trained coaches from the Irwin families and our community. The Irwin LMR team meets Tuesdays and Thursdays right after school (4:30 - 5:45). The boys exercise and participate in fun activities, which help them learn how to express themselves, reach personal goals, and improve their overall wellness. At the end of the program, the boys celebrate their hard work with a 5K road race.
What does Let Me Run teach boys?
Let Me Run coaches guide the boys through lessons about wellness and well being, like respect, positive competition, and nutrition. Our lesson plans, including “Real Men Show their Feelings," "Everyday Heroes," and "Getting to Know You,” connect boys sole to soul by encouraging full expression of their individual feelings. Plus, the coaches instruct boys on proper running form and correct stretching techniques.

"Each season concludes with a 5K run and celebration. Our Springfest 5K Run was in Huntersville on a very hot May afternoon. We had set goal times for the run, but a combination of heat and a big hill quickly dashed those hopes. Nonetheless my team gave it their best. After eight of the boys finished, they noticed that two of their team members hadn’t crossed the finish line. The boys wanted to find their teammates and finish with them so we could all do it together. Nothing brought a bigger smile to my face that day." |
